Massage as a Tool in Treating Anxiety

Most people think of relieving muscles stress when they think of massage. They get massage because they have thrown out their back or are recovering from an injury. But did you know that massage has long been used to treat anxiety and panic disorders?

People with anxiety have trouble relaxing, they spend most of their time in a state of “fight or flight” and end up with debilitating muscle fatigue for their trouble. Massage therapy can help to alleviate the pain of muscle tightness in and around the back and shoulders. It can reduce the heart rate that accompanies panic attacks.

It is recommended that if you are using massage to help alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and/or panic attacks, that you schedule regular appointments. This is a therapy and as such you are training, with the help of a massage therapist, your body on how to relax and breathe and experience calm.
